Summer Talks That Stick: Building Mental Health Through Everyday Conversations

Written by : Re'Shae Green

School’s out, and while the backpacks may be tucked away, kids’ minds are still buzzing—with energy, emotions, and questions. Summer break can be a fun reset for families, but it’s also a golden opportunity to help your child build emotional intelligence and mental wellness through simple, consistent conversations.

Here’s why it matters: According to the CDC, 1 in 5 children in the U.S. has a mental, emotional, or behavioral disorder. And summer, without school routines and support systems, can sometimes make it harder to notice the signs.

But here’s the good news: Talking helps. A lot.

🎒“Backpack Talks” Without the Backpack

Think of “Backpack Talks” as those casual moments—whether during snack time, car rides, or while folding laundry—where you ask light but meaningful questions. These moments are low-pressure, but high-impact.

Here are 3 conversation starters to help connect with your child and boost their mental well-being this summer:

🌤️ 1. “What was your favorite part of today?”

This keeps things positive and gives you a peek into what brings them joy. Over time, you’ll spot patterns—what energizes them and who they feel most comfortable around.

Why it works: Helps build self-awareness and gratitude.

🧠 2. “Was there anything today that felt tricky or weird?”

This open-ended question gives them space to talk about tough feelings without the pressure of a “bad day” label.

Why it works: Encourages emotional regulation and honesty.

💪 3. “Is there anything I can help with or just listen to?”

Sometimes kids just want to be heard. Offering help without forcing it teaches them it’s okay to ask for support—and that they’re not alone.

Why it works: Builds trust and models healthy communication.

👪 Parent Tip: Practice “Listening with Your Face”

Put your phone down. Make eye contact. Nod. Smile. Your full attention tells your child: You matter to me. That’s powerful.

Bonus Tip for Teachers and Caregivers:

These same questions work in classroom or camp settings too! Even if you’re not a parent, being a safe adult in a child’s life makes a huge difference.
